Rodda's Creamery
Redbay design is proud to be chosen as project landscape architects to Rodda's Creamery in Cornwall.
The site has developed over the last 120 years from a working farm to the sole production of quality milk products that are sold all over the world. The site has undergone other influences including mining and tipping of waste from the construction of the A30 trunk road.
We have been integral to the design and planning process for the long term development and growth of the creamery. The project has looked at increased production capacity, sustainable waste disposal and energy needs and circulation around the site including parking and HGV deliveries.
We initially undertook a detailed landscape and visual appraisal that gave us a good understanding of the issues and opportunities and constraints that the landscape presented.
Our work went beyond assimilating the new development within the landscape and has created a strategy that seeks to restore a landscape that had been degraded and become fragmented through years of industrial change.
The client was keen to provide solutions that were sustainable and economically viable in the long term, this has led to the proposed Anaerobic Digestion Plant and associated reed beds. We worked with H2OK water engineers to create large scale reed ponds that have been integrated into the open countryside. The whole project will see a net gain of environmental benefits not just to the factory but also the remaining agricultural landscape.
Our services included: feasibility and LVIA. Landscape Masterplanning, detailed planting proposals and landscape management.

Our work extends to the regeneration of existing housing areas, working in partnership with housing association's and residents to implement estate wide improvements that raise the standard of the environment and make places more relevant and functional living spaces.

Totland Close
Environmental Improvement Scheme
Redbay design has been involved with Totland Close since 2008, working for First Wessex Housing to transform two underused quadrant spaces within existing blocks of flats.
Through site analysis and resident surveys we have created two distinct spaces with different functions. Courtyard One has traditionally been used as a transitional space as it acts as the go between from the site entrance through to other parts of the estate including Courtyard Two and the community centre. Where as Courtyard Two had a large tarmac surface surrounded by a low wall and was used by children for informal play.
The design for Courtyard One is based around a curved promenade opening out to a central plaza that is slightly raised by subtle ground modelling and low planting that subtly dissects the site into various spaces for informal quiet seating.
The design for Courtyard Two is more a gathering area with play and ball games under a light canopy of trees which breaks up the large expanse of tarmac particularly when looking down on the space from the surrounding flats. A social garden has been created outside the community centre with decorative paving, raised borders and picnic tables which gives an additional focal point for residents to come together.
Our services included: masterplanning, detailed design and production information.

Play schemes have formed a core aspect of the practice's work over recent years and is amongst the most satisfying to do. Our philosophy is to create a play environment where children can explore, be creative and express themselves as well as a place for families to come together.

Brighton Play Builder
We have been involved with a number of the
national Play Builder programme areas and
were one of two landscape practices chosen to
redevelop twenty four of Brighton and Hove's
play spaces during 2009-2011.
Working in partnership with Groundwork
Solent for Brighton and Hove City Council
our commission was to provide design, public
consultation and production information
services.
We engaged with local young people through
school working groups and outreach sessions
initially to understand how people use their
play space and then for the children to be
actively involved with the design of each
space.

Thornhill School
Working in partnership with Thornhill Primary School, Southampton City Council and Groundwork Solent we were commissioned to develop a community Adventure Play facility that catered for all ages. The project has been extensively financed by the Lottery Fund.
The play area is fully supervised so we had an opportunity to create a facility that offers the children challenges beyond those provided by standard public play spaces.
The site itself is set within woodland which brought its own opportunities, constraints and challenges. We wanted to make full use of the setting without compromising the health of individual trees and use natural materials that complimented the site's character. The central theme was to create a high woodland climber where the children could play amongst the branches. We worked closely with The Childrens Playground Company to design equipment that achieved the design brief whilst meeting high play equipment standards.
Our services included: scheme design, coordination of specialist sub-consultant reports, planning application, production information, procurement of contractor and contract administration.
